What is plant-based bread?

Plant-based bread is any kind of variety of bread made with plant-sourced ingredients. Generally, no animal products are included in the recipe but most importantly, plant-based bread is made with whole food ingredients and is minimally processed.

Can bread be a part of a plant-based diet?

Following a plant-based diet often means you have to question every ingredient in the foods you eat. This includes something as mundane and simple as bread. Can you still include bread if you’re following a plant-based diet?

Vegan vs. Plant-Based

Isn’t it the same?

Well, they share plenty of similarities but are fundamentally different. Here’s why.

Cambridge Dictionary has the term vegan as a person who does not eat or use any animal products, such as meat, fish, eggs, cheese, or leather.

The term vegan is usually tied to multiple lifestyle choices that go beyond food. Since it lays its foundation on ethics and animal welfare, vegans avoid any activity, clothing, and any other product made or tested by animals. Regarding food, as long as it contains no animal-derived products, it’s considered vegan.

On the other hand, plant-based is defined as consisting or made entirely of plants, or mainly of plants. This term was introduced in the nutritional space to refer to the eating of low fat, high fiber, vegetable-based diet for health reasons, not ethics.

Having said that, following a plant-based diet isn’t always vegan. Some animal products may be acceptable for some individuals: like eggs or honey.

Nevertheless, following a plant-based diet is mainly focused on foods with ingredients from whole-food sources and are minimally processed.

To provide alternatives for both vegan and plant-based individuals, we’re going to focus on bread that is both vegan and minimally processed.
